The Breast Cancer Discussion List exemplifies the best of electronic community: it pulls together compassion, companionship, and information. An intensely active list (100+) messages daily, the Breast Cancer Discussion List's culture stresses identity and recognition. Breast cancer patients, current and former, their friends and family, medical personnel and researchers frequent the list, talking about symptoms, the horrors and challenges of treatment, how to sustain hope or at least sanity through darkness and sadness, and how to be a supportive family member or friend.
