Community Memory: Discussion List on the History of Cyberspace
http://memex.org/community-memory.html Community History, a CPSR (Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility) project, is an ongoing oral history of cyberspace and online life. Participants share anecdotes of early online life and pre-net history and try to answer specific questions from others about those days. One intriguing question recently asked was an attempt to determine the first web search engine. Participants are asked to think of the list as an ongoing collective conversation, and it does have a great deal of that quality. It is moderated, however, to keep conversation focused on descriptions of early cyberspace. The goal is not merely to share and record personal stories but to compile information necessary for an informed view of how digital technology is affecting our lives, institutions and cultures. Along the way, though, readers can find some great tales of the olden days, some fascinating trivia, and perhaps a sense of wonder over how far we have come in such a short time. -E.L. subject matter: the Net regional affiliation: global format: mailing list language: English cost: none
