There's a crystal fragility that surrounds the posts of
soc.support.depression.misc. Many of the participants are refugees of the
larger soc.support.depression, but it grew too large and there were too
many trolls for comfort. The overwhelming atmosphere is one of
vulnerability and a community based on defining what "normal" is and
where they fall in these parameters. In this support group medicine
cocktails are compared, steam is released, and permission is granted to
feel like shit. What is striking about this group is the sense of
sanctuary. All of these participants are mothers, fathers, children, and
friends with the everyday stresses and demands compounded by various
flavors of depression. This is the place that the connection is made with
people "who understand." Included are various URLs and pointers to other
specific support groups. - D.L.J.
