Hotwired's Threads allow readers to post in reaction to Hotwired's many features. Most threads don't go anywhere, but certain areas do shine, such as the topics in Netizen, especially when writers interact with readers, and Brain Tennis (the "Virtual Communities: Is the Well Dry?" topic was of particular interest to us cyberanthropologists). The areas that succeed as community-creating discussions are those areas where the Wired and Hotwired writers, editors and guest participate, creating conversation that really connects to Hotwired's content. Doesn't happen often enough, but Hotwired drives forward excellent, thoughtful discussion when it does. - J.S.D.
