Military & Vets Club
http://www.aol.com Most of those who gather here are veteran, though some are active military and reservists. Participants have tracked down old service buddies, talked about items of interest to specific bases and posts, compared notes on best and worst places to be stationed, and swapped military humor--including many true stories, some obviously very difficult to tell and a few told for the first time. Some vets from the forum keep in touch through regular face-to-face reunions, using the bulletin boards to spread the word. Members gather in the conference room nightly from 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm for freeform chat, and at 9:00 pm Thursdays for conversation on a planned topic. The Military Brats of America area, the bulletin board for (now mostly adult) children of active military personnel, has been quite successful. For awhile there was much joking about having a monument to honor the children of military personnel who are routinely uprooted in frequent transfers. This led to the formation of "Project Footlocker," a Department of Defense exhibition. Project Footlocker was launched in June, 1996. Military 'brats' from all eras and all branches of service were asked to contribute written stories, copies of photographs and other memorabilia. Each item will be recorded with the donor's name in a permanent logbook that will accompany the footlocker on its journey around the country. - E.L. subject matter: military life regional affiliation: North America, Europe format: conferencing, chat language: English cost: 19.95 per month for unlimited usage |
